Two words-- voice and choice-- signify the profound changes higher education faces. Navigating the sheer abundance of voices and choices is a challenge. And making our voices and choices heard is an opportunity.
Abundant information is inevitably changing our culture, including our roles in education. And now that more than 20% of all students in higher education take online courses, online learning is a significant part of higher education. Its growth is expected to continue at a faster rate than face to face education. This trend permeates all of education, here and abroad, affecting the quality, scale and breadth of our work. Many of us--faculty, administrators, instructional designers, support services, employers and employees alike-- have learned that sharing effective practices to get desired results is the smart way to respond to abundant information.
The results we want include better access, scalability, learning effectiveness, and faculty and student satisfaction. Achieving these results depends on practitioners helping each other build responsive learning organizations in which our voices and choices are shared and made known beyond the classroom and across institutions.
