Introduction:

The NECC Learning Communities (LCs) Faculty Survey is designed to obtain information concerning faculty members’ experience with this course format, particularly with respect to:

  • student enrollment and withdrawals,
  • positives or benefits for faculty,
  • negatives or frustrations for faculty,
  • positives or benefits for students,
  • negatives or frustrations for students,
  • perceived differences between LCs and stand-alone courses, and
  • faculty development activities for LCs (both those in place and desired).

We are still refining the Faculty Survey: you will notice that this semester’s is shorter. These surveys can serve many purposes including obtaining information that can be useful in developing materials and planning efforts to recruit students for LCs, as well as in planning orientation and development programs for faculty. The surveys also provide an opportunity for faculty to reflect on their experience and that of their students, which may lead to modifications in instructional style and/or course materials in the future.

Nothing in these surveys will now or ever be used for any purpose related to the evaluation of individual faculty. We are so small a group that anonymity may not be functionally possible. Although we will summarize and compile information with no names attached, we may want to include quotes from your responses for the purposes of emphasis or description. In those cases, there may be information in your quote that may suggest your identity.

Therefore, we request your permission, indicated by your checking the appropriate box, for use of your survey as described above. As noted, this may include use of direct quotes from your responses. The information will be shared only with LC faculty and staff.

2. What has been frustrating or has not worked well for you?
3. What do you think has worked well for your students, or how have they benefited from being in this LC?
4. What do you think has been frustrating for your students or has not worked well for them?
5. Having taught courses in both community and “stand-alone” format, how would you compare your experiences? What would you say are the strengths and weaknesses in each approach?
